THEUNISSEN – A multi-disciplinary operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and mining security personnel has resulted in several arrests and the seizure of suspected gold-bearing material and equipment in the Theunissen policing precinct.
The integrated operation, conducted between 15 and 21 August, forms part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the Lejweleputswa District.
During the operation, a 42-year-old woman was arrested after she was allegedly found in possession of suspected gold-bearing material (GBM) at a farm near Theunissen.

A further 14 male suspects, aged between 21 and 50, were arrested at the same farm for alleged contraventions of the Immigration Act.
Police also confiscated suspected gold-bearing material, a truck and equipment believed to have been used in illegal mining activities during the past week.
Authorities said the operation demonstrates the continued commitment of law enforcement agencies and private security partners to disrupt illegal mining operations and related criminal activities in the province.
The multi-disciplinary teams will continue conducting intelligence-led operations aimed at identifying and dismantling illegal mining activities in the Free State.
Police said further operations will be conducted as part of efforts to protect communities, mining infrastructure and the province’s natural resources.
