Concerned Resident, Welkom:
I write this letter with a heavy heart, but also with honesty. We can no longer pretend that everything is fine in our community. Crime is a serious problem, but so is the silence and complacency that allow it to continue.
People in positions of authority are entrusted with protecting residents from violence, vandalism, bullying and crime. When personal disputes or interests interfere with these responsibilities, trust in leadership is destroyed.
The law must be enforced fairly and consistently, without fear or favour.
Another major concern is the illegal drug trade. Drugs reach our children and contribute to theft, housebreaking and other crimes. We must confront those involved in selling drugs rather than only deal with the consequences.
End culture of silence
It is particularly painful when families knowingly provide shelter to people involved in criminal activity.
We must also end the culture of silence. Neighbours who report suspicious activity should not be told to mind their own business. People must be able to report crime without fear of intimidation or victimisation.
Faith leaders have an important role. Churches should be willing to speak the truth and stand against criminality.
Community meetings are important, but residents need more than meetings. We need action, accountability and consequences.

We must also address residents who refuse to pay for essential municipal services. At the same time, government must be held accountable for corruption, wasteful expenditure and poor service delivery.
Ultimately, we must take responsibility for the leaders we elect.
We therefore call for the law to be enforced without fear or favour; decisive action against drug dealers; protection for whistleblowers; greater accountability from public officials and faith leaders; and capable people to be placed in positions of responsibility.
Residents have a responsibility: stop protecting criminals, stop remaining silent about wrongdoing and demand better from those who represent us.
