I have written to the municipal manager to lodge an urgent complaint regarding criminal activity and harassment at the Welkom landfill site.

This is a serious problem. Personal cars are being harassed by groups of people at the landfill site. They intimidate drivers and act as if they have a right to be there and control who comes in.

We do not know who is contracted to the site. There is no signage, no security, and no municipal official to manage the site. The municipality is not helping. When reported, no action is taken. This leaves residents and business owners vulnerable.

This creates a safety risk for everyone using the landfill. It also opens the door for theft, illegal dumping, and assault.

We as residents request the immediate deployment of municipal security/ SAPS patrols at the landfill during operating hours. We also want carity on who the contractor is for the landfill site. The municipality must put up signage with contact details. there must be access control and a fence/gate with an official attendant so only authorized people enter.

Section 152 of the Constitution says the municipality must ensure a safe and healthy environment. Right now, the landfill is not safe.

We trust this matter will be treated as urgent.
