Welkom Public Order Policing have recovered the knife believed to have been used in the murder of the man in Bronville on Sunday.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a man who was allegedly killed due to a case of mistaken identity.
Members attached to the Welkom Public Order Police (POP) arrested three men and two women for the murder of Johannes Moshemane Mollo (36).

“It is alleged that on Sunday 5 April, at about 06:30, the victim was on his way home with a female companion in Bronville. They were accosted by the alleged suspects and one of the female suspects identified the victim as Sandisile. The victim then told the suspects that he is not Sandisile they have mistaken him for someone else. It is further alleged that the suspects began to assault the victim and his girlfriend. The victim then attempted to stop the females who were assaulting his partner when he fell to the ground. The suspects then fled the scene on foot,” says Capt. Palesa Thabana, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa police.
The deceased was found with three stab wounds to his back. The suspects, aged between 23 and 32 years, were subsequently located and arrested for murder.

On Tuesday, 7 April, the police have recovered a murder weapon alleged to be used in the murder incident. During the investigation on Tuesday one of the suspects revealed to the police where the murder weapon was hidden. The suspect was officially booked out of the police holding cells for the purpose of the investigation. He then led police to a bushy area in Bronville not far from the scene of crime.
Police confiscated one black knife found hidden in the bush. The knife was booked in as evidence and will be taken for forensic analysis.
