WELKOM, MATJHABENG – It was a day filled with mixed emotions for the police in Welkom as they bid farewell to Col Jacobus van der Merwe, head of support, and Lt Col Kagisho Ratsuba, relief commander in the Community Service Centre (CSC), both of whom retired at the end of March.
Van der Merwe was applauded for his 40 years of unblemished service during a farewell function held at MTC Endless Events and Hall in Riebeeckstad.
In his address, Maj. Gen. Len Singh, deputy provincial commissioner for support services, commended both members for their unwavering service.
He described Van der Merwe as a man whose name has become synonymous with dedication, professionalism, and integrity within the police.
Singh praised Van der Merwe’s commitment to self-development before citing his qualifications, noting that his leadership had been very informed, relevant, and impactful.
He described Van der Merwe as a leader who would be remembered most for the man he is.
“A leader who led with quiet strength, a mentor who guided with patience, a colleague who stood firm in times of pressure, and a servant of the people,” Singh noted.
In conclusion, he told the two officers: “You leave behind a legacy, a legacy of discipline, reliability, and excellence.”
During his address, Singh paused to encourage young members in the service to take this as an example of what years of discipline and dedication can produce, imploring them to serve with integrity.
Brig. Disebo Cezula, station commander of the Welkom police, reflected on the time she worked with the two officers, describing them both as remarkable leaders.
She described Van der Merwe, fondly known as “Koos,” as the brains behind the success of the station.
“He was someone who prioritised the safety of the members above all,” she said.

She described Ratsuba as “the face of the station who kept the fire burning” with her outstanding work in the CSC. Cezula wished them well in their journey.
Maj. Gen-Dr Tholie Afonso, commissioner of the Lejweleputswa District, delivered a message of appreciation to both.
In her speech, she highlighted that the day was about “celebrating those who dedicated their lives to serving South Africa with integrity”.
Van der Merwe and Ratsuba served in the police for 40 and 35 years respectively, leaving behind distinguished careers marked by dedication to public service and community safety.
