An Odendaalsrus family lost their home and belongings in a devastating fire on 21 March, prompting serious questions about the state of emergency services in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
Ward councillor Estelle Dansey has written to the municipal manager and speaker to escalate the issue of the failure of emergency services and to secure urgent accountability and a clear turnaround plan following the incident.
Dansey said the incident raised serious concerns about emergency service capacity in the municipality.
“Despite the fire brigade being contacted at the time of the incident, no municipal response was received, even days later.
“The situation required intervention from a local company, whose assistance helped contain the fire and prevent further damage.”
She highlighted that the event exposed two long-standing challenges that have repeatedly been raised in council by DA councillors.
“There is an ongoing shortage and apparent unavailability of operational firefighting vehicles, and continual water supply interruptions. The persistent water problems are especially noticeable over weekends, and this severely hampers emergency response efforts and places residents at risk,” Dansey said.

She emphasised that whilst this was not an isolated incident, it served as a stark reminder of the real human cost of prolonged service delivery shortcomings.
The failure of municipal emergency services left the affected family reliant on private sector intervention; while water supply interruptions that have become a recurring problem in the area, particularly affects weekend emergency responses when municipal services are already operating with reduced capacity.
The combination of equipment shortages and infrastructure failures has created a dangerous situation for residents.

Dansey stated that the DA believed residents deserved a municipality that was responsive, prepared and capable of delivering basic services, especially in times of crisis.
The party has been vocal in council about the deteriorating state of emergency services and the need for urgent intervention to restore proper firefighting capabilities.
Tshediso Tlali, spokesperson for the mayor’s office of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, did not reply to a media enquiry by the time of going to press.
