The residents of Rheederpark Extension 2 continue to endure an unacceptable service delivery crisis due to the persistent failure of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
Estelle Dansey, DA ward councillor, says that despite repeated interventions critical issues relating to sewage spills and water leaks remain unresolved.
“More than four months ago, the DA formally reported the severity of blocked sewer lines, ongoing spillages, and water infrastructure failures to the municipality’s infrastructure department. These concerns have been met with silence and inaction.
“Even after escalating the matter via the Public Participation Officer, no tangible progress has been made.”
During a recent oversight visit by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), it emerged that the Director of Infrastructure had allegedly acknowledged the existence of a collapsed sewer line in Rheederpark Extension 2 (Western Holdings).
Shockingly, no remedial steps have followed this admission
Estelle Dansey, DA ward councillor
“Shockingly, no remedial steps have followed this admission.”
Dansey says this prolonged neglect extends beyond basic service delivery; its consequences are now threatening vital housing development.
The sewer and water infrastructure failures have stalled the construction and completion of 100 RDP houses, denying residents access to dignified housing.
These impacts have been clearly communicated to the municipality, yet no action or formal commitment has been received.
In response to this ongoing failure, Dansey has initiated a petition demanding urgent intervention and a permanent solution to the sewerage and water crisis in Rheederpark Extension 2.
The petition will be delivered to the office of the municipal manager on 15 August.
Should the municipality fail to act, the matter will be escalated to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) for urgent intervention.
The residents of Rheederpark Extension 2 deserve dignity, safety, and basic municipal services. The municipality must acknowledge the urgency of this crisis and act immediately.
