Western Province (WP) rugby legend Calla Scholtz has been released from custody with a warning, with the conditions of a violated interdict reinforced.

Following his appearance in the Caledon Magistrates’ Court this morning (Friday 24 July) for six counts of alleged contravention of a domestic-violence writ, the 66-year-old has been ordered to not contact the complainant.

The decorated former player, whose full name is Nicolaas Burgert Scholtz, was also ordered by the court not to enter Greyton, Genadendal or Klein Eike Farm as per the conditions, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

He was arrested on Saturday 18 July and made his first appearance on Tuesday the 21st, which Hermanus Times reported.

According to the NPA his case has been postponed to 10 September for further investigation.

Scholtz’s rugby history

In 2016 the provincial rugby legend made headlines when police seized illegal abalone from his farmhouse in Greyton. He successfully proved a third party was renting the house without his knowledge.

The former WP full-back, who was part of the team’s dominant Currie Cup era in the 1980s, played a key role in the team’s five consecutive title wins between 1982 and ’86.

He became popular and gained legendary status for his ball handling, try scoring and tactical kicking abilities.

He represented the Springboks during their internal tour in 1985, but never made the national squad, which led to him being known as the era’s greatest “uncapped” player.

In 1988 he was named Men’s Player of the Year at the South African Rugby Awards.
