The community of Bonteheuwel has been urged to come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of suspects who shot an Uber driver on Friday.

The driver responded to a pick-up request in Karree Road, Bonteheuwel, where he was ambushed. Upon arriving, he was robbed at gunpoint and shot, and his vehicle was stolen. Fortunately, he survived the shooting.

Critical information

Angus McKenzie, local ward councillor, says he wants to sincerely thank the residents who acted swiftly by alerting him and providing critical information. “Because of the community’s quick response, we were able to coordinate with our law enforcement agencies, with the outstanding assistance of the police’s Flying Squad. As a result, the stolen vehicle has been successfully recovered and, following the necessary forensic and investigative processes, will be returned to its rightful owner,” says McKenzie.

According to McKenzie, while this is an important breakthrough, the work is not yet complete. “We appeal to anyone who may have information about those responsible for this cowardly attack to come forward. Every piece of information, no matter how small, could assist investigators in identifying and arresting the perpetrators.

“Together, we can ensure that justice is served, that those responsible are held fully accountable for their actions, and that Bonteheuwel remains a community that stands united against crime. Thank you to everyone who played a role in this successful recovery, and to our dedicated law enforcement officers for their swift and professional response,” he says.

Hijacking

Sergeant Wesley Twigg says the Bishop Lavis police have registered hijacking and attempted murder cases for investigation following an incident on Friday, 24 July 2026, at about 20:00, in Karee Road, Bonteheuwel.

“The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his body and was transported to a medical facility for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made yet. We can confirm that the victim’s vehicle was recovered.
