The Symphony Choir of Cape Town will present Karl Jenkins’ “Stabat Mater”, bringing together around 250 performers in two performances at the City Hall.
Collaboration
The concert marks the fourth collaboration between the Symphony Choir, WindWorx and the University of Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under the baton of Levi Alexander. Joining them will be the SACS Boys’ High School Choir, Herschel Girls’ School Choir and soloist Minette du Toit-Pearce.

Each year the Symphony Choir partners with Cape Town schools to introduce young singers to major choral works, giving them the opportunity to perform alongside experienced musicians while fostering a lifelong appreciation of choral music.
Programme
Composed in 2007, “Stabat Mater” is Jenkins’ contemporary setting of the 13th-century Latin hymn. Blending choir, orchestra, ethnic instruments and multilingual texts, it explores themes of grief, compassion, suffering, hope and humanity. The programme will also include Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria” and Marta Keen Thompson’s “Homeward Bound”.
Performances will take place at Cape Town City Hall on Tuesday 18 August and Wednesday 19 August at 19:00.
Tickets are available at Quicket.
