The Western Cape police this week managed to seize more than 400 Mandrax tablets.

Thembakazi Mpendukana, provincial police spokesperson, says the discovery and seizure of the drugs and the subsequent arrest of three suspects were carried out during crime prevention operations conducted by Operation Lockdown and the police’s Anti-Gang Unit respectively.

All three suspects were arrested on Tuesday 15 September during separate incidents and are being charged with the possession of drugs, says Mpendukana.

Goodwood arrest

Mpendukana says in the first incident, a 38-year-old man was arrested on the corners of Beaufort Street and Voortrekker Road in Goodwood after he was found in possession of 200 Mandrax tablets. He was detained at Goodwood Police Station and will appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged, says Mpendukana.

Mpendukana says further investigations led the police to the Tienie Meyer Informal Settlement in Bellville where they discovered 36 Mandrax tablets and 13 sachets of tik at the suspect’s residence. They also arrested an 18-year-old man who will appear at the Bellville Magistrate’s Court.

Langa arrest

Members of the police’s Anti-Gang Unit also arrested a 29-year-old man in Langa that same day after following up on information received about suspected drug activities in Thabo Mbeki Road, Langa. The suspect was arrested after a thorough search of his house when 200 Mandrax tablets were discovered, the police say. He will appear at the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court.
