Young people in Goodwood are encouraged to join the newly established Goodwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) Youth Desk Project.
This is a youth-led programme designed to involve, develop and empower young people within the community in helping to preserve and strengthen safety structures in Goodwood, Abdallah Sydney, CPF chair, pointed out.
Under the guidance of experienced CPF and police facilitators, participants will learn leadership skills, teamwork and communication, community responsibility, safety awareness and how to positively impact their community, he explained.
There are two groups in the programme; Group 1 is open for young people between ages of 17 and 25 years, and Group 2 is for youth aged 13 to 16 years.
Why it matters
Sydney said Goodwood’s future depends on their youth and young adults. Schools, religious organisations, sports and recreation groups, and other community structures all play an important role in shaping responsible future leaders, he said.
Anthony Verhoog has been appointed as the CPF Youth Desk facilitator.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility
Over the past year the CPF has successfully established four sector neighbourhood watches with strong support from the police, Law Enforcement, Metro Police and the community.
“Now is the time to secure that legacy by developing the next generation of community leaders,” said Sydney.
Volunteers
The CPF is also calling on volunteers and seeks the help of community facilitators, social workers, teachers and parent assistants. Sydney said volunteers will receive official acknowledgement from the CPF and the police for their contribution and service.
