CAPE TOWN – A former senior traffic superintendent has been jailed for corruption after selling learners’ and drivers’ licences for cash.
Elvis Frank Nontyi (55) was sentenced by the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court to six years’ imprisonment, of which three years were suspended for five years. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Nontyi who was stationed at the Stellenbosch Driver’s Licence and Testing Centre, pleaded guilty to six counts of corruption. He had access to the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) and was authorised to test applicants for learners’ and drivers’ licences, including the issuing thereof.
Between 17 March and 19 July 2022, he issued licences to applicants in exchange for cash payments of R5 550.
Provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Makgato, welcomed the sentence, saying it sends a strong message to those who abuse their authority for personal gain.
