CAPE TOWN – Cape Town will host a weekend of sporting action on 12 and 13 September, with 21 000 participants taking on the OUTsurance Gun Run and football fans heading to Athlone Stadium for a Cape Town Derby.

Gun Run races across the weekend

The OUTsurance Gun Run will see participants tackle varying distances on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s programme includes the 17km Trail Run, 10km road run, 5km Fun Run and 5km Pet Walk, with the 21,1km taking place on Sunday.

The 5km and 10km routes will start on Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Green Point and take runners through parts of the Atlantic Seaboard and will finish at the Green Point Shared Fields. The 17km trail run will set off from Van Riebeeck Park, follow a route through the trails of Table Mountain, detour via Signal Hill with views of the city bowl and finish at the Green Point Common Fields.

Road closures and traffic interruptions

The City of Cape Town says setting off between 06:30 and 08:30 on Saturday, the Gun Run races will have an impact on traffic, particularly across the Green Point, Mouille Point and Sea Point areas.

On Sunday, the half marathon route passes through Green Point, De Waterkant, Sea Point, Camps Bay and Clifton.

Residents and motorists, the City says, are urged to take note of road closures and traffic interruptions on part of the route, including Somerset Road in Green Point, Beach Road in Green Point and Mouille Point, Beach Road in Sea Point, Kloof Road and Victoria Road in Camps Bay.

Cape Town Derby at Athlone Stadium

On Sunday, newly promoted Hope FC host Cape Town City FC at Athlone Stadium in the first ever derby between the two sides. The highly anticipated Cape Town Derby in the Motsepe Foundation Championship kicks off at 15:00, with gates opening at 13:00.
