A 37-year-old man has been arrested by a team from the police’s Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, the Hawks, in Bellville for vehicle-finance fraud. He is accused of submitting false proof of income to secure finance for a Mercedes-Benz valued at R354 990.

In making their arrest today (17 September) they were assisted by the Tactical Response Team, also of the police, after a warrant was issued against the suspect, according to police spokesperson Lt Col Siyabulela Vukubi.

False proof of income

He said it is alleged the crime took place in February 2019, which saw him take delivery a 2019 Mercedes-Benz 6.3 AMG for the principal debt amount of R354 990. However, meticulous investigation identified the application as fraudulent. The vehicle was recovered and handed over to the financial provider, Vukubi said.

Court appearance

The suspect was expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (18 September).
