Brackenfell’s vehicle licensing drive-through is extending its weekday hours to 18:00 until 31 December, giving motorists a wider window to renew their licence discs before the busy festive-season rush hits.
The City of Cape Town launched the facility, the first of its kind in the metropole at the corner of Reservoir and Kruispad Roads last year. The drive-through allows motorists to renew their discs without leaving their vehicles.
Since then, thousands of motorists have used the service, with renewals processed in an average of just five minutes.
Pilot project
Weekday hours will now run from 07:00 to 18:00 under a pilot initiative until the end of the year. Saturday hours remain unchanged, from 08:30 to 14:00. After the pilot, the City will assess service-demand data to determine whether the extended hours should continue into the new year.
The drive-through caters exclusively for motor vehicle licence renewals and operates on a cashless basis, with debit and credit cards being accepted. No other transactions, such as registrations, are handled at the facility.

Mayco member for finance Siseko Mbandezi thanked motorists for their continued support and urged more residents to use the extended hours as the end-of-year period approaches.
“Since the launch of this innovative facility last year, the Brackenfell drive-through centre has been incredibly successful, helping thousands of motorists renew their vehicle licences quickly and conveniently,” he said.
The City encouraged residents to take advantage of the longer hours, renew early and avoid the last-minute queue that typically builds at licensing outlets as the festive season approaches.
