How do individuals and organisations move good ideas from paper into possibilities that can make a real difference in people’s lives and communities?

This was a central question explored by like-minded social-services practitioners and other stakeholders with an interest in social development at a recent conference organised by social-services organisation Badisa, followed by its annual general meeting.

Badisa staff and board members, representatives from the organisation’s network of more than 130 community-based programmes, along with businesspeople, suppliers, keynote speakers and performers were present at Die Bron Church at Willowbridge Centre, Bellville.

This year’s conference theme, “From Paper to Possibilities”, resonated fully with the reality of the organisation’s work. The conference operated on the understanding that behind every report, strategy and programme are people, families and communities. The event presented an opportunity to step away from everyday demands, reconnect with a shared purpose, a necessary step towards building stronger networks, Badisa stated.

A conference with a difference

Actor and entertainer Charles Tertiens was the master of ceremonies, while Early B brought energy to the morning programme through storytelling and music, getting the audience on their feet.

The programme also included Liomee Vosloo and Ilana Steyn, with sessions focusing on purpose, individual strengths, meaningful networks, media engagement and practical ways to contribute towards stronger communities, the organisation said.

An AGM with a twist

Instead of a traditional AGM format, Badisa this year incorporated elements of a live television show, combining formal annual business with couch conversations, interviews, music and storytelling. One of the most moving moments was when Springbok Sevens player Jayden Nell shared his personal story, with barely a dry eye in the house afterwards.

Singer Leah also joined the evening programme for a live interview and concert performance, giving those present an opportunity to connect with her through both conversation and music.

More than an event

For Badisa it was like building one combined organisation, one big Badisa, comprising social-services role-players, development workers, businesspeople and board members with a shared purpose.

“This event gave us an opportunity to reconnect with why we do this work,” said Basie van Wyk, Badisa CEO, “and reflect on what becomes possible when we harness our individual strengths towards a common goal.”

The organisation works across the Western Cape and parts of the Northern and Eastern Cape, supporting individuals, families and communities through a wide range of social-care services.
