Kuils River Cricket Club marked a significant milestone in its history on Saturday 2 May, celebrating its 70th anniversary with a gala evening. The occasion brought a highly successful cricket season to a fitting and memorable close.
The celebration was held at Sarepta Primary School’s hall and conducted in grand style, drawing members, guests and notable figures from the broader cricketing fraternity.
The occasion served not only as a tribute to the club’s remarkable longevity, but also as a formal recognition of the excellence displayed by its members throughout the season.

Adding prestige to the evening was the attendance of Johannes Adams, president of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA), and Mario Solomons, captain of the South Africa over-50 side. Their presence underscored the club’s standing within the cricketing landscape and highlighted its ongoing contribution to the development of the sport.
Awards
Among the highlights of the evening were the club’s premier individual honours.
Bridget Newman was named Sportswoman of the Year, while Tao Avontuur claimed the Sportsman of the Year Award. Both recipients were recognised for their outstanding performances and exemplary commitment throughout the season, embodying the high standards to which the club aspires.

The evening reflected the club’s enduring values of dedication, sportsmanship and community spirit, principles that have sustained it over seven decades.
“The gala evening was surely an event to remember,” said club chair Charles Newman. “The event encapsulated both the past and the present by honouring the club’s proud legacy while looking ahead to continued growth and success.
”As the Kuils River Cricket Club, entered its eighth decade it did so with a firm foundation and a renewed sense of purpose, committed to nurturing talent and upholding the rich traditions of the game.”
