The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWSSA) said Cape Town criminals have stooped to new lows to ambush motorists on the R300 highway.
Wire around their necks
It said criminals had taken to hanging dogs from concrete palisade walls lining parts of the roadway using bits of wire tightly wound around their necks, leaving them to dangle and suffer in the hope that such distressing scenes will force motorists to stop and rescue them, and whom they will then rob as they do so.
“On Sunday 26 April we received a call from a distressed motorist who spotted a dog hanging from the wall behind Samora Machel,” a post on AWSSA’s Facebook page stated, “and another cruelly jammed between the concrete palisades. Their inclination was to stop and help but they suspected this may be a trap so alerted us as soon as it was safe to do so.”
Senior Inspector Sivuyile Kilwa, accompanied by senior nurse Michelle Henning, responded to the scene within minutes, but tragically both dogs had already succumbed to injuries and suffocation. “In our experience, this is not an isolated incident, but rather proof of just how ruthless criminals have become,” the AWSSA said. “If you witness a suspect setting up such a scene, do not stop. Instead, call our emergency hotline on 082 601 1761.”
Barbaric savages
Commentators on the post were outraged. “We are sharing a country with barbaric savages. They don’t deserve to breathe the same air as these beautiful creatures they are murdering,” one said. Another commenter said: “Please, Father God, unleash your full wrath on these demons that they may never harm another animal or human ever again and you may get justice for these poor dogs in the mighty name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.”
TygerBurger reached out to the police for comment, and will add comment as soon as it is received.
