Three suspects were arrested on Thursday 9 April following a shoplifting incident in Bellville, after a coordinated search operation by private security personnel.

Bassett Alarms’ Control Room received a report of a shoplifting incident at around 11:55 at a local fuel station convenience store. A Bassett Alarms officer was immediately dispatched and arrived on scene within minutes to assess the situation.

After reviewing CCTV footage, a detailed description of the suspects and their vehicle was obtained. A second officer joined shortly afterwards and a coordinated search strategy was quickly put into action.

With time being critical, members began checking nearby fuel stations and surrounding areas. In less than 10 minutes, a Bassett Alarms officer successfully identified the suspect vehicle travelling along Durban Road toward the N1 from the Tygervalley side.

Tactical approach leads to capture

Maintaining a calm and tactical approach, the officer kept visual contact whilst communicating live updates over the radio. The suspects briefly pulled into another fuel station but continued on, eventually stopping at a nearby butchery.

Seizing the opportunity, the officer positioned himself strategically and kept a watchful eye as one suspect exited the vehicle and entered the butchery.

Concealed stolen meat valued at approximately R3 000 was stolen at a butchery in Bellville.

Moments later, two additional officers arrived on scene. Acting swiftly and decisively, they moved in and secured the suspects at the vehicle. One suspect was found in the boot area while another remained in the driver’s seat. Both were ordered to the ground and placed in handcuffs without incident.

Simultaneously, the first officer proceeded into the butchery, where he located and apprehended the third suspect. During a search, it was discovered that the suspect had concealed stolen meat under his clothing, valued at approximately R3 000.

All three suspects were detained and taken back to the initial scene. The police were contacted and arrived shortly afterwards, after which the suspects were handed over for further processing.

Further investigation revealed that additional goods, also valued at over R3 000, had been stolen from another retail store earlier in the day.

Sgt Charles Neelse from Bellville Police Station confirmed the arrests and the suspects appeared in Bellville Court.

According to Bassett Alarms, the successful operation highlights excellent teamwork, rapid response, and disciplined coordination by their members on the ground. Their ability to act quickly, remain calm under pressure, and execute with precision led directly to the arrest of all suspects and the recovery of stolen property.
