VOTE BEING CAST IN BOX
The IEC in the Western Cape will conduct a by-election in Ward 104 of the City of Cape Town on Wednesday 25 March.

The South African government is encouraging all eligible citizens to register for the 2026 Local Government Election, with a special registration weekend planned for 20 to 21 June.

The Department of Government Communication and Information System has started a campaign asking voters to “make their voice count” in the democratic process.

Registration details

The registration weekend will take place on Saturday 20 June and Sunday 21 June. Citizens can register from the age of 16, but must be 18 to vote. Online registration is already available through the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Voter Information Portal at https://registertovote.elections.org.za.

The government says voting gives citizens a direct say in how their communities are run, whilst promoting accountability by making elected representatives answerable to the people they serve.

How to register

Citizens can register online through the IEC Voter Information Portal. Here they can also update their details, check addresses, apply for special votes, or find voting stations. They can also make appointments for face-to-face registration during office hours at their nearest IEC office.

The campaign is part of the government’s wider effort to strengthen democracy by ensuring leadership reflects what the people want and need. For more information, visit the IEC Voter Information Portal or contact your local IEC office.
