CAPE TOWN – Trail running enthusiasts have a rare opportunity to tackle Table Mountain’s iconic terrain when the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon (TTOM) Trail Run returns for its 13th edition on Friday 10 April.

With only 500 spots available for each distance, organisers are expecting fierce competition for places on what promises to be an unforgettable mountain adventure.

The event offers two challenging routes – 16 km and 24 km – both showcasing the breathtaking scenery that makes Table Mountain a world-renowned destination.

“Both distances invite runners to experience the magic of Table Mountain in a truly special way during the TTOM weekend,” explains Chris Goldschmidt, chairperson of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC.

“Participants can look forward to an exclusive, immersive trail adventure, surrounded by some of the most iconic scenery in the world.”

Designed for different abilities

The 16 km route, featuring 960 to 1 000 m of ascent, caters perfectly for trail running newcomers. Starting from the University of Cape Town, runners will traverse Newlands Forest’s cool, leafy surroundings before tackling Devil’s Peak for sweeping views across the city, ocean, and Robben Island.

Meanwhile, the 24 km challenge, with its substantial 1790 to 1800 m ascent, demands serious trail running experience. This route includes the technical and exposed Mowbray Ridge above the Blockhouse, alongside the magical Newlands Forest and spectacular Devil’s Peak vistas.

Expert tips for trail success

Course designer Trevor Ball from Energy Events offers essential advice for participants:

  • Keep expectations realistic as mountain running times are much slower than road running.
  • Don’t go out too hard on the first hill.
  • Walking is okay.
  • Good hydration is often the key to enjoying a trail run.
  • Train in the forest when possible, to get used to the ground underfoot.
  • Always look good – there are cameras everywhere!
  • Plan your nutrition carefully and stick to it; you’ll be on the trail for hours and need energy.
  • At hydration stations, don’t just charge past – fill up with water and enjoy the fruit.
  • Be lekker! If you’re passing someone, be polite – karma moves fast in the mountains!
  • Compulsory gear is not optional. Check the requirements online.
