CARLETONVILLE – Two illegal miners were shot and killed during a police operation in Carletonville on Sunday morning, following a gunfight that lasted approximately two hours.
The South African Police Service National Intervention Unit and Gauteng Public Order Police conducted an intelligence-driven operation at around 04:00 on 8 February, targeting a house where illegal miners were suspected of possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the suspects attempted to flee when officers arrived at the scene.
“Upon arrival at the targeted house, members observed suspects attempting to flee by jumping out through windows. The suspects immediately opened fire on police officers and members responded accordingly,” Mathe said.
She said a prolonged exchange of gunfire ensued between the suspects and police, lasting an estimated two hours.
Two illegal miners were declared dead at the scene. Police seized two AK47 rifles, two pistols and ammunition.
No police officers were injured during the operation.
Mathe said the suspects, identified as Basotho nationals, are considered extremely dangerous.
“The suspects are extremely dangerous and pose a threat to public safety, as they showed no hesitation in shooting at police,” she said.
Police continue to conduct surveillance operations in the area to apprehend suspects who fled into nearby bushes.
