Two arrested in Bishop Lavis and Elsies Rivier over liquor, drugs and firearm


Western Cape – Two separate arrests were made on Saturday 27 June under Operation Lockdown III, including a Bishop Lavis liquor and drug bust and a shooting incident near Stellenbosch.

A 62-year-old woman was arrested in Bishop Lavis for the illegal sale of liquor and possession of drugs during an operation conducted by members of Operation Lockdown III.

Police were conducting routine patrols along Lark Road at around 01:00 when they observed individuals leaving the suspect’s residence with alcohol. Officers then entered the premises, where they discovered the woman allegedly trading liquor without a licence.

A search of the property led to the recovery of 14 sachets of cocaine, as well as 144 beers and an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect was immediately arrested on charges relating to illegal liquor trading and drug possession.

She is expected to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Monday 29 June.

In a separate incident, members of Operation Lockdown III were en route to the Elsies River Police Station when they spotted a grey Nissan Almera near Stellenbosch Arteria.

As officers approached the vehicle, a man exited carrying a firearm. While police officers were instructing the suspect to lie down, three male suspects allegedly emerged from the vehicle and opened fire while fleeing towards nearby bushes.

Police returned fire and successfully apprehended two suspects, aged 34 and 61, on charges including possession of unlicensed firearms, pointing of a firearm, and attempted murder.

One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to a medical facility under police guard. The second suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday 29 June 2026.

Police say investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
