Cricket fans were treated to some of the best T20 cricket of the 4th Betway SA20 season so far following matches that delivered high drama at two venues yesterday (17 January), with crucial victories reshaping the playoff picture ahead of the tournament’s climactic phase.

Capitals stage remarkable comeback at the Wanderers

In a low-scoring thriller at the Bidvest Wanderers, Pretoria Capitals pulled off a stunning 21-run victory over Joburg Super Kings, recovering from 7-5 to post a defendable 143-6.

The turnaround belonged to Sherfane Rutherford, who remained unbeaten on 74 from 50 balls, and Dewald Brevis, who contributed 53 from 47 deliveries. Their century sixth-wicket partnership transformed what seemed certain defeat into a competitive total.

Dan Worrall had seemingly put the match beyond the Capitals’ reach with devastating early bowling, including a rare T20 maiden over. The Australian finished with 2-12, leaving the visitors shell-shocked at 10-5 after the powerplay.

Defending their modest total, captain Keshav Maharaj orchestrated a masterful bowling display, claiming 3-15 from his four overs. Roston Chase provided excellent support with 1-11, as the pair squeezed the life out of the Super Kings’ chase.

James Vince’s departure to a Maharaj delivery that found the slip fielder triggered a collapse that saw the home side stumble to 58-5. Despite captain Donovan Ferreira’s brave attempt to bat through injury, the Super Kings fell 21 runs short.

The defeat extends the Super Kings’ winless streak to six matches, leaving them needing victory in their final fixture against Paarl Royals on Monday to secure a playoff berth.

Markram masterclass powers Super Giants

At Kingsmead, Aiden Markram’s brilliant century guided Durban’s Super Giants to their first home victory of the season, defeating Paarl Royals by 58 runs.

Markram’s unbeaten 108 from 58 balls, featuring 12 fours and five sixes, anchored DSG’s imposing total of 189-7. The skipper’s innings reached its crescendo in the 19th over, where he plundered 28 runs from Sikandar Raza, including the six that brought up his second SA20 century.

Heinrich Klaasen provided valuable support with 29, as the pair added 81 for the fourth wicket after early wobbles had left DSG vulnerable.

The Super Giants’ spin trio then dismantled Paarl’s reply. Simon Harmer delivered a miserly 1-13 from four overs, including nine consecutive dot balls (15 in total), while Sunil Narine claimed 2-18. Markram chipped in with economical figures of 1-9 in two overs.

Paarl’s chase never gained momentum, losing five of their first six wickets to spin bowling. A fatal middle-order collapse saw them surrender five wickets for just 28 runs, effectively ending their resistance.

Playoff implications

The results intensify the playoff race, with Joburg Super Kings still able to pip DSG to the final qualification spot by winning their remaining fixture. MI Cape Town also lurk as contenders, needing a bonus-point victory in their final match to sneak into the playoffs.
