The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of Xoliseka Lali (43), Chief Whip of Emalahleni Local Municipality in the Chris Hani District.

As previously reported, Lali was gunned down on 21 July at about 18:00 at his rented apartment in South East Village, Westbourne, Komani.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, following intensive investigations by the Eastern Cape Provincial Serious Violent Crime Unit, critical information was pursued, which led investigators to Mthatha.

She said that on 28 July, three suspects – two men and one woman aged between 37 and 42 – were apprehended.

“The suspects were taken in for questioning. The suspects have been formally charged with murder,” said Gantana.

She added that the three suspects will appear before the Queenstown Magistrate’s Court on 30 July.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, commends the swift and coordinated response of the Provincial Serious Violent Crime Unit, whose diligent follow-up on leads resulted in these arrests.

“We assure the community that all investigative avenues are being pursued to ensure justice is served,” said Kupiso.
