Three overseas tourists rescued after near-drowning incident at Kenton-on-Sea

EASTERN CAPE – Three overseas tourists were rescued and later released from hospital following a near-drowning incident at the main beach at Kenton-on-Sea on Saturday 27 June.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Port Alfred and its satellite station NSRI Kenton-on-Sea were activated at 12:46 after eyewitnesses reported a drowning in progress.

NSRI rescue crews, together with Gardmed ambulance services and Coastal Kindness volunteers, responded swiftly to the scene.

On arrival, responders found three male casualties, aged 20, 23 and 25, identified as two American nationals and one Brazilian national. The men were already out of the water and on the beach.

Medical personnel immediately began treatment as all three showed signs consistent with non-fatal drowning. Paramedics continued stabilising care on scene before transporting the trio to the hospital in stable condition as a precaution.

Hospital medical staff later confirmed that the men recovered well and were discharged the same day, requiring no further medical treatment.

Preliminary reports suggest that while swimming, one of the men encountered difficulties in the water. His two companions reportedly re-entered the surf in an attempt to assist him, using a bodyboard for flotation to help bring him back to shore.

Authorities have urged beachgoers to exercise caution and remain aware of changing ocean conditions, particularly at unguarded or high-risk swimming areas.
