KIMBERLEY – Following a series of violent incidents committed whilst she was a minor, a 19-year-old female has been sentenced on Wednesday 22 April by the Douglas Regional Court for murder and two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
In the first incident, two female learners, aged 15 and 16, were involved in a fight at a school in Douglas. The altercation escalated into a second confrontation on 19 February 2023, during which the accused fatally stabbed the 15-year-old victim multiple times with a knife.
She was subsequently arrested for murder and released on bail, said Warrant Officer Molefi Shemane of the Northern Cape Media Centre.
Whilst out on bail in Douglas, the accused was involved in a second incident on 23 August 2023, in which she stabbed Mikayla Williams (23). She was arrested and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and released on bail.
In a third incident, whilst still on bail for both previous offences, the accused stabbed Deon Botha (50) multiple times on 19 November 2024.
She was again arrested and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and remained on bail until the finalisation of the case.
On Wednesday, the Douglas Regional Court sentenced the 19-year-old, who was a minor at the time of the offences, to ten years’ imprisonment for murder, of which two years are suspended for five years.
She was also sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for the two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The court further declared her unfit to possess a firearm.
The Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, commended Detective Sergeant Frans April of the Douglas Detectives for his meticulous investigative work, which led to the successful conviction and removal of a violent offender from society.
