The fire that broke out on the lower slopes of Table Mountain yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon has largely been extinguished.
The fire was fuelled by extreme heat, low humidity and wind-driven embers, which quickly spread toward Devil’s Peak.
This followed the South African Weather Service’s weather advisory for the Western Cape, warning of conditions that could intensify the fire.
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, said crews would conduct a recon this morning of the affected area to check for hotspots.
“The City’s Fire and Rescue Service worked closely with the Table Mountain National Park [TMNP] and the Volunteer Wildfire Service to contain this blaze, as has become custom.”
He reminded residents to take precautions ahead of the warmer months.
“It is a timely reminder to the public of how easily wildfires can start, and as we head into the warmer months we appeal to everyone to do their bit for fire safety, whether vegetation or structural.”
