The youth of Bonnievale and Riviersonderend attended a workshop presented by the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Public Education and Outreach Section on Monday 19 September.
It involved various other activities too, including a tour of the parliamentary chamber and of the bustling Greenmarket Square as well as a visit to the Executive Mayor of Cape Town’s office at the Civic Centre on the Foreshore.
During their first visit to Parliament the youth attended a workshop where they were introduced to the three spheres of government – the Executive, Parliament and the Judiciary – and the role and functions of a provincial parliament. They also learnt about human rights and cultural heritage.
On their visit to the council offices the group was warmly welcomed by the Deputy Mayor, Eddie Andrews, and taken on a tour of the council chamber, where they were seated and addressed by the Deputy Mayor himself.
Sergeant Sarah Julies, social crimes officer at Bonnievale Police Station, undertook to do this on a yearly basis, a way of opening up opportunities for young people.
