Mrs Globe South Africa Top 40 finalist Yolanda Nieman encouraged West Coast College women not to let anything get in the way of pursuing their dreams and becoming a success.
Guest speaker at a gathering of women from all five campuses, who had converged on the Student Centre of the Malmesbury campus, she related how she had “literally had R50 in my pocket and decided I had to leave my home town and went by train to Cape Town… And now the rest, as they say, is history!
“But I would not be where I am today if I had not continued knowing my worth and pursuing my dream to make a success and help anyone I come across on my journey.”
The Women’s Day event, the first hosted “face-to-face” by West Coast College since the start of the pandemic, had one aim in mind for everyone present – to be inspired and let their hair down.
The theme was “Mama Mia”, and boy, were the ladies ready to come in their ABBA suites, frills, glitter and dungarees!
“We are so glad we had this opportunity to host this for our ladies,” said Rhazia Hamza, West Coast College Deputy Principal of Innovation and Development.
“After this year and all that has happened we really thought we needed to give our ladies an opportunity and a day when they could just enjoy themselves.”
The day ended with an invitation to everyone to join in doing a dance and jive to a selection of ABBA songs, and even college staff were caught up in all the musical merriment.
“In the past [to mark the occasion] we asked the ladies to contribute money to a fund, and the proceeds would go to a charity,” Hamza said.
“But this year [instead of money] we asked each one to bring along a slightly used bra that functioned as their entrance to the event. These would be donated to Afeebra, an organisation assisting women who do not have the means to acquire bras.”
If anyone wishes to donate their used bras to a worthy cause, or to know more about the college and its offerings, they must please contact the Central Office of West Coast College on 022 482 1143.
