The Easter holidays are here, and parents are gearing up to keep their children safe while they enjoy a hard-earned break from school.

“As parents we know that safety is your top priority,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Communications and Marketing at a national security company.

“That’s why we are here to offer some valuable tips to ensure your children have a secure and enjoyable first-term school holiday.”

Firstly, communication is key.

Open communication is very important for keeping your family safe. Teach them to identify potentially dangerous situations and speak up if they feel uncomfortable or scared in any situation. “You should be prepared to listen and act on their concerns,” says Hattingh.

Supervision is also a key aspect, she adds.

Always ensure children are properly supervised and plan activities that can be enjoyed together or that they are supervised by a trusted family member, friend or caregiver. This is vital when visiting crowded parks or shopping centres.

Online safety is more important than ever in 2023.

“With more time on their children’s hands, parents must ensure they monitor websites and social media platforms,” says Hattingh.

“Teach your children about the potential dangers of sharing personal information and interacting with strangers online.”

She emphasises up-to-date identification info on children, especially if separated from parents, including a recent photo.

Parents must ensure their homes are secure and their children are aware of basic safety measures –locking doors and windows, keeping valuables out of sight and knowing how to contact emergency services, what to do when a fire or any other emergency occurs.

“Here’s to a safe, secure vacation,” said Hattingh.
