What a season for the Vasco Da Gama Football Club (FC) u-12 boys 2024 has been. The players had a remarkable journey and were able to bag both trophies in the u-12 Division 5 League of Cape Town Tygerberg Local Football Association, says coach Cobain Johns.
The boys displayed great passion and teamwork throughout the season which saw them dominate the league. They had a winning streak of 14 games in a row from the start of the season, he says.
Their first loss came very late in the season with a convincing 3-0 win for FN Rangers.
“Vasco’s first trophy however came in the Knockout League Cup where we faced FN Rangers for the second time in the season. Nerves were high for that game being that we lost not too long ago to the same team. We started with conceding an early goal in the game, managed to show resilience and ended the game with a 4-2 win, lifting the first trophy of the season,” says Johns.
“We won the league on the last match-day with a convincing 3-0 victory against Rygersdal on Saturday 19 October, lifting our second and final trophy of the season,” he says.
“We as coaches are extremely proud of the squad for this achievement. It’s truly deserved. Every practise, every game, and every moment of teamwork has shown us their growth, not just as athletes, but as individuals. Our message to them is to keep pushing, stay focused and always believe you are capable of great things, whether in sport or academics.
“Also a huge shout-out to the parents and support on the sidelines for always motivating the boys and losing their voices cheering them on,” says Johns.
The team is coached by Johns and André Petersen.
Individual awards were also handed out to team members Guerschom Lukesha (Player’s Player of the Season), Unam Cwaba (Sportsman of the Year) and Ruben Stoffels (Player of the Year).
