LIMPOPO – A suspected poacher was shot dead during a confrontation with members of the Anti-Poaching Unit on a farm in the Pienaarsrivier policing precinct in the Waterberg District on Friday evening.
The incident occurred at about 23:00 on 19 June when Anti-Poaching Unit members conducting routine patrols in the area heard three gunshots and responded immediately.
Drones were deployed to locate the suspects and assess for rhino carcasses. A drone detected suspected poachers and relayed their location to police.
When police approached, the suspects fled into nearby bushes. One was observed carrying a rifle and another a backpack. While tracking one suspect, Anti-Poaching Unit members and the drone came under fire. Police returned fire in self-defence and the suspect was fatally wounded.
The deceased suspect had no identification on him. A firearm was found next to his body.
Drones subsequently located three fresh white rhino carcasses on the farm. Two of the rhinos were found dehorned, while one was not dehorned. A knife in its sheath and an additional sheath were recovered at the carcasses.
Police have opened cases of rhino poaching, attempted murder and murder.
The provincial commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, said rhino poaching is a serious organised crime that threatens wildlife and the safety of police members.
“This incident shows our Anti-Poaching Units will respond decisively to protect our natural heritage,” she said.
A manhunt for the remaining suspects is underway.
