Suspected Dutch drug mule arrested after police seize Khat worth R240 000

JOHANNESBURG – The police in Gauteng has arrested a suspected male drug mule from the Netherlands at the OR Tambo International Airport following an intelligence-led operation.

Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, national spokesperson for SAPS, said during the operation police seized more than 40 kilograms of Khat concealed inside the suspect’s luggage.
“The Dutch national was en route to Frankfurt, Germany when he was intercepted by police at the airport. The drugs have an estimated street value of R250 000,” said Van Wyk.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Monday, 25 May, facing charges related to drug trafficking.

Van Wyk said police continue to intensify efforts to combat transnational organised crime and drug trafficking through intelligence-led operations at all ports of entry across South Africa. “Over the past two years, SAPS has intercepted and arrested more than 50 drug mules at the OR Tambo International Airport,” she said.
