KIMBERLEY – A 28-year-old suspected drug dealer from Kimberley has been discharged from hospital following medical treatment for ingesting the drugs to conceal evidence.
Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, spokesperson for the provincial police, said the suspect allegedly swallowed some of the substance during his arrest by members on Friday night.
“He was released from the hospital the same night after treatment and has been placed in custody while awaiting his court appearance,” said Ehlers. She said the suspect was nabbed by members attached to the Provincial Police Operational Response Services, the Frances Baard District Task Team and the Kimberley Flying Squad.
Ehlers said the officers were conducting patrols when they spotted the suspect at approximately 22:00 travelling in a Toyota Yaris in the Kimberley CBD. Up

“During the search, they discovered suspected Khat with an estimated street value of R3 990 and a substantial amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of criminal activities,” she said.
Ehlers said members seized the drugs and money as evidence, adding that the investigation continues into the illicit drugs. She said the suspect was expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrates Court soon, facing charges of dealing in drugs and possession of drugs.
Ehlers said the Northern Cape multidisciplinary police team was continuing to conduct crime operations under the auspices of Operation Shanela II.
