CAPE TOWN – Young Stormers flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed could be a surprise selection for the Springboks’ Nations Championship matches in November, according to former Springbok centre Gcobani Bobo.

Ahmed, who starred for the Junior Springboks as they defended their U20 World Championship title earlier this year, is part of the Stormers squad for the United Rugby Championship, which kicks off this weekend.

The youngster started at flyhalf for the Cape side in their pre-season match against the All Blacks during the Greatest Rivalry tour, delivering an assured performance that showed he was unfazed by the occasion.

Bobo believes Ahmed possesses all the attributes required of a modern number 10.

“He’s got a chance,” Bobo said at a URC media roundtable on Tuesday. “I think he could be one of those players who becomes a bolter at the end of the year. I think the world is going to get to know what type of player he is.”

What makes Ahmed special

Bobo elaborated on what sets Ahmed apart in the flyhalf role.

“For me, it’s just the toughness that he has,” he said. “There is something about the way that he’s so aggressive in the tackle.

“He is such a talent, the way he plays the ball flat. I think he suits the modern game. He plays right on top of the gainline. He’s got the physicality, a great skill set, footwork and great speed on him, and a great kicking game.

“I think he’s got a chance to upset a few of those senior players. I think Sacha has to look out for his number.”

The Stormers begin their campaign with an away fixture against Connacht in Galway on Friday night. Kick-off is at 20:45.
