Stormers vs Sharks at DHL Stadium: City announces transport plan for 40 000 fans

The DHL Stormers kick off their United Rugby Championship (URC) home campaign against the Hollywoodbets Sharks at DHL Stadium on Saturday 10 October, with the City of Cape Town rolling out a full transport and logistics plan for an expected crowd of around 40 000 spectators.

The City has urged fans to arrive early and make use of a free MyCiTi shuttle service for ticket holders, saying the use of the bus shuttle on game days has increased over the past few seasons.

“Arriving early and taking the bus helps us move as many people as possible into the stadium precinct with ease, while also easing the pressure on our roads,” said JP Smith, Mayco member for Safety and Security. “Our safety and security personnel, working alongside other City departments, will be deployed to help ensure a smooth and safe journey to and from the stadium.”

He encouraged spectators who have not yet used the shuttle to join the thousands who do.

Match-day schedule

Stadium gates open at 13:00 for a 16:00 kick-off. The URC match will be followed by an SA Rugby u-20 Cup fixture between the DHL Stormers BOLTS and the Leopards, kicking off at 18:15 and running until 20:00, the City said.

Free MyCiTi shuttle

The free shuttle service for ticket holders starts at 12:30, departing from the Civic Centre, Thibault Square and the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). At the CTICC, the shuttle operates from the City Sightseeing bus stop near Entrance 3 on Walter Sisulu Avenue.

The last bus will depart from the stadium and the Green Point precinct at 20:30.

Parking options

The City said approximately 1 000 parking bays are available at the CTICC at a cost, with parking opening at 13:30 and online bookings available to secure a spot.

It will also open its parking areas at the Civic Centre for ticket holders from 12:00. The bays, accessible from Hertzog Boulevard incoming and on Civic Road, are available on a first-come, first-served basis and will close at midnight, they said.

Paid parking is also available at Parkalot on Jack Craig Street and at Harbour Arch on Harbour Arch Boulevard.

Off-street parking in the CBD is free from 13:00 on Saturdays.

Road closures

Residents and motorists have been advised that Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Stephan Way, Vlei Road and Granger Bay Boulevard will be impacted from 06:00 until after the game, the City said.
