The Stormers survived a spirited Lions challenge to claim a 34-27 victory in their United Rugby Championship derby at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, overcoming an early deficit to maintain their impressive home record.

The Lions delivered a stunning start, capitalising immediately after Evan Roos dropped the kick-off to establish early dominance. Their excellent ball-carrying created space for Ruan Venter, who crossed for the opening try in the second minute to establish a 7-0 lead.

The visiting side maintained their momentum throughout the opening quarter, with the Stormers struggling to retain possession whilst the Lions controlled territory and tempo. Chris Smith extended their advantage with a penalty in the 19th minute, pushing the score to 10-0.

Neethling Fouché marked his 100th appearance with outstanding scrummaging, providing a platform for the Stormers who finally found rhythm in the 28th minute when play spread wide to Dylan Maart, who demonstrated explosive pace to outrun his defender and score, reducing the deficit to 10-7.

Jurie Matthee’s penalty with three minutes remaining in the first half levelled proceedings at 10-10, but the Lions’ dominance in securing kick-offs continued to cause problems. The visitors earned a penalty and kicked to touch, establishing a maul from which Venter peeled away to score his second try, giving the Lions a 17-10 half-time lead that reflected their territorial dominance.

The second half began dramatically when Quan Horn’s kick bounced awkwardly into retreating Cobus Reinach’s hands. The Stormers scrum-half made significant metres before excellent interplay with Zas and Simelane resulted in the latter crossing to level the score at 17-17.

The Stormers’ tactical masterstroke arrived in the 45th minute when they replaced six forwards, immediately impacting proceedings. The fresh pack earned a penalty in the 53rd minute, utilising their renewed energy to dismantle the Lions’ maul defence and send Paul de Villiers over for the crucial score. Matthee’s accurate conversion established a 24-17 lead.

Smith responded with a penalty four minutes later to narrow the gap to 24-20, but Matthee’s excellent goal-kicking continued when he slotted another penalty to restore the seven-point cushion at 27-20.

The Stormers thought they had extended their lead in the 63rd minute, but Ntuthuko Mchunu’s try was cancelled for obstruction. However, they secured their bonus point when Roos crashed over from another dominant maul to make it 34-20.

The Lions mounted a late rally when Warrick Gelant’s poor clearance gifted them possession. Quan Horn’s clever kick found Kelly Mpeku, who gathered to score and reduce the deficit to 34-27 with ten minutes remaining.

Despite the Lions’ spirited finish, the Stormers held firm to secure victory in an entertaining derby encounter.
