Steve Barker has stepped down as Stellenbosch Football Club‘s head coach after nearly nine years of distinguished service to join Tanzanian Premier League giants Simba SC in a move that closes a remarkable chapter in South African football.
Stellenbosch FC confirmed Barker’s departure earlier this week, ending a tenure that transformed the club from National First Division aspirants into established Premiership contenders and continental competitors.
Barker initially joined Stellenbosch as assistant coach to Sammy Troughton during the club’s inaugural season before his appointment as head coach in July 2017 launched an era that established the team as a household name in South African football.
Under his stewardship spanning 309 matches across all competitions, Stellenbosch achieved remarkable success that exceeded all expectations. The club gained promotion to the Premiership as 2018-19 National First Division champions before making history as the first team to claim the revamped Carling Knockout trophy in 2023.
Barker guided Stellenbosch to back-to-back MTN8 finals in 2024 and 2025 whilst securing consecutive qualifications for the CAF Confederation Cup, demonstrating the club’s evolution into continental competitors.

The 57-year-old coach explained his decision represented both personal ambition and recognition that Stellenbosch required fresh leadership for their next phase.
“It is a bittersweet decision, but I feel the time is right for Stellenbosch to enter a new era with someone else at the helm, and I can only wish the club continued success in the future,” Barker stated.
“I believe that taking up a new and exciting challenge at one of the biggest clubs on the continent is something I need to pursue to further my own personal growth and ambitions as a coach, and I’m grateful that my time with Stellenbosch has helped open that door.”

Barker expressed profound gratitude to the club’s management, staff, and players past and present for their unwavering support throughout his tenure, emphasising that he would forever cherish the memories created together.
Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie paid tribute to Barker’s extraordinary service, highlighting achievements that extended beyond mere statistics.
“Steve’s achievements on the field speak for themselves, but his influence has been just as important in helping shape the culture, identity, and professional standards that have become synonymous with Stellenbosch FC in recent years,” Benadie declared.
Benadie emphasised that Barker’s nearly nine-year commitment reflected remarkable loyalty and deep dedication to the club’s long-term vision, which remains firmly on track due to his substantial contributions.
“Details regarding the coach’s successor will be announced in due course,” a spokesperson from the club said.
The CEO expressed confidence that established structures and philosophy would ensure continuity and stability during the transition, positioning the club strongly for future success whilst wishing Barker and his family success in Tanzania.
