SpaceX has appointed prominent South African-born venture capitalist Roelof Botha to its board of directors, less than a week after the company completed a record-breaking $75 billion initial public offering on the Nasdaq exchange.

According to a regulatory filing submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Botha was elected as an independent director and audit committee member effective 16 June. The appointment brings the number of SpaceX board members to nine.

SpaceX cited Botha’s extensive public company experience and deep audit committee background as vital assets for the newly public entity. He will focus on capital protection and financial oversight, while CEO Elon Musk retains his positions as chairman, chief executive and chief technologist.

The historic SpaceX listing on 12 June raised $75 billion, pushing the rocket and satellite company’s valuation past $2.1 trillion and making Musk the world’s first trillionaire. Musk controls more than 82% of voting rights at SpaceX and owns shares in the company worth over $1 trillion.

The appointment marks a full-circle professional reunion for Botha (52) and Musk, whose shared history spans more than 25 years. Born in Pretoria in September 1973, Botha was raised in Cape Town after his family moved to Hout Bay. He attended Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck and studied actuarial science, economics and statistics at the University of Cape Town.

After working as a business analyst at McKinsey & Co in Johannesburg, Botha earned an MBA from Stanford University, graduating at the top of his class. Musk recruited him to PayPal in March 2000, where Botha eventually became chief financial officer.

Botha is the grandson of South Africa’s longest-serving foreign minister, Pik Botha, and the son of economist Dr Roelof Botha.

Since 2003, Botha has worked at Silicon Valley venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, where he spearheaded investments in YouTube, Instagram, 23andMe and MongoDB. He served as managing partner until 2025 and now advises the firm.

Sequoia has backed SpaceX since 2019 and holds approximately 1.5% of the company, a stake now worth tens of billions of dollars following the IPO. The firm also invested in Musk’s other ventures, including Neuralink, The Boring Company and X, the social media network formerly known as Twitter.
