South Africa’s tourism boom continues as August arrivals pass one Million

PRETORIA – South Africa’s tourism sector has achieved another major milestone after welcoming 1,005,286 international tourists in August 2026, once again surpassing the landmark one-million threshold in a single month.

According to data released by the South African Government, August’s figures represent a 7.4% increase compared to August 2025, underscoring sustained global enthusiasm for the country’s diverse attractions.

Sustained growth across key global markets

The strong August surge brings total international arrivals for the first eight months of the year (January to August 2026) to 7,581,455 visitors – an 11.7% surge compared to the same period last year.

Long-haul travel continues to lead the international recovery, with key Western nations providing the bulk of overseas arrivals:

  • United States: Retained its status as South Africa’s top overseas market, supplying 37,134 tourists during August.
  • United Kingdom: Ranked second with 25,749 arrivals.
  • Germany: Secured third place with 14,731 visitors.

Converting visitor demand into jobs and community growth

Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille highlighted that while arrival numbers are encouraging, the national strategy must focus on converting headline growth into tangible economic benefits.

“Welcoming more than one million international tourists in August demonstrates the demand that exists for South Africa, De Lille said.

“Our focus must now be on converting that demand into investment, jobs and economic opportunities. We must give visitors more places to go, more experiences to enjoy and more reasons to stay longer, while ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach more communities across our country.”

To support this objective, the government is hosting the South African Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit (SATIS) this week. The gathering brings together international investors, regional leadership, and industry stakeholders to mobilize capital for new infrastructure, expand regional travel offerings, and diversify products beyond traditional travel hubs.

A top-performing destination on the global stage

The latest figures align with broader international data. According to UN Tourism, South Africa emerged as the strongest-performing African destination during the first half of 2026, recording 12% growth in international arrivals compared to H1 2025.

UN Tourism ranks South Africa among the top 20 best-performing destinations globally among countries reporting data for the first half of the year, highlighting its competitiveness against major international destinations.
