Photographers, both amateur and professional, focus your cameras and get snapping, as Vergelegen wine estate’s fourth annual photography contest launched on Wednesday 1 April with an exclusively black-and-white challenge set against the backdrop of autumn’s changing landscape.
The popular Somerset West competition, which drew over 500 entries last year, introduces two major changes: photographs must be captured in April and May (instead of summer), and all entries must be monochrome.
“We’re challenging photographers to rely on light, shadow, texture and composition rather than colour,” explains marketing manager Caroline van Schalkwyk. “This constraint encourages experimentation and can transform ordinary scenes into striking, timeless images.”
The 326-year-old heritage estate offers diverse subjects, from dramatic mountain backdrops and tree-lined avenues ideal for landscapes, to seasonal garden blooms perfect for macro photography. Wine cellars and restaurants provide additional opportunities for compelling compositions.
In partnership with Orms Direct, Vergelegen will host guided photo walks featuring Fujifilm equipment. While the Saturday 18 April session is fully booked, spaces remain available for Saturday 9 May (08:30-11:00; R50) with consultant Hein Hough.

Three categories welcome entries:
- Camera class (any camera with or without lenses)
- Smartphone class (mobile devices)
- Junior class (16 and under, any device)
- People’s Choice (voted by guests)
Prizes include photographic equipment, restaurant vouchers, wine and estate experiences. Winners will be announced at a mid-year function.
Participants may submit up to two photographs taken at Vergelegen, each with a caption explaining their subject choice. Winners agree to display rights for estate marketing, with photographer credit guaranteed.
“We invite visitors to capture what defines Vergelegen’s magic and share their interpretations of this remarkable estate,” says van Schalkwyk.
