Another gang-related shooting leaves one dead and three injured in Goodwood

The scene of the crime on Sunday in Goodwood.

CAPE TOWN – One person is dead, three others suffered injuries after gunmen allegedly fired shots at them in Goodwood this past weekend.

News of the incident spread like wildfire on Sunday and Monday as people shared various photos and videos of the incident online.

The Western Cape police confirmed the incident, saying that their anti-gang unit detectives are currently investigating a murder and attempted murder cases. The Goodwood police, they said, responded to a complaint of a shooting the afternoon and upon their arrival at the scene found four men with gunshot wounds.

Medical personnel declared a 20-year-old man dead at the scene while paramedics transported three other men, also in their twenties, to a medical facility, says Sgt Wesley Twigg, provincial police spokesperson. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and the police have not yet made any arrests,” he said.

Abdallah Sydney, chair of the Goodwood Community Policing Forum, said at this stage all they know is that the incident is gang related. “One person died on the scene,” he said.

Photos of the white VW Polo parked next to the side of the road was shared on social media by media and community organisations. On one of the pages reports suggest the occupants were driving when gunmen fired shots, and that the driver lost control before crashing into a tree in Van Riebeeck Street.

Sydney said four occupants were in the car at the time, and that the driver died on the scene while the rest were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

The ER24 private ambulance service were on scene and treated some of the patients.

Ineke van Huyssteen, spokesperson, confirmed that their services had responded to the shooting incident and said that when they arrived at the scene shortly after 13:30, they found four men who had sustained gunshot wounds. “One of the men was fatally wounded, while the other three suffered injuries ranging from various to critical.”

ER24, along with various other medical services present, treated the patients before transporting them to the hospital for further medical care, she said.
