Severe weather warning issued for Nelson Mandela Bay

GQEBERHA – Residents and businesses across Nelson Mandela Bay have been urged to prepare for severe weather conditions as the South African Weather Service issued a Level 5 warning for disruptive rainfall expected on Wednesday and Thursday.

The warning indicates a high likelihood of heavy downpours that could lead to localised flooding, hazardous road conditions, infrastructure damage and disruptions to essential services. Authorities have warned of potential risks to life and property.

A cut-off low-pressure system is forecast to bring cold, wet and windy conditions to the central and southern parts of the country from Wednesday, with the Eastern and Western Cape particularly vulnerable to localised flooding.

“A cold front is expected to slip south of the country, with a cut-off low deepening west of the country, which is expected to propagate eastwards across South Africa from Wednesday and finally exit the country towards the weekend,” the Weather Service said on Monday.

The municipality’s Disaster Management Centre, emergency services and relevant departments have been placed on high alert to monitor weather developments and co-ordinate responses to any incidents.

Executive mayor Babalwa Lobishe said residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should take necessary precautions to protect themselves, their families and property.

“Motorists are advised to avoid travelling, unless necessary, during periods of intense rainfall and should never attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, streams or low water crossings,” Lobishe said.

The municipality has called on residents to stay informed through official weather updates, secure loose outdoor items, clear drainage systems where possible and avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions. Any emergencies, flooding, fallen trees or damaged infrastructure should be reported immediately to emergency authorities.

Lobishe said the municipality is implementing proactive measures to safeguard communities and minimise the impact of the severe weather.

“While municipal teams are on standby and ready to respond, community co-operation is critical in reducing risks and preventing avoidable incidents during this period of severe weather,” she said.

The municipality said it would continue providing updates as conditions develop.

Peaceful protests monitored across metro

Law enforcement agencies are monitoring protest action taking place in parts of Nelson Mandela Bay, with gatherings remaining peaceful and no disruptions to traffic reported.

“Law enforcement agencies remain on site and continue to monitor the situation to ensure public safety, maintain public order and facilitate the lawful exercise of constitutional rights,” the municipality said.

While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful protest, the municipality said all public gatherings must comply with the Regulation of Gatherings Act and applicable legislation.

Residents have been encouraged to obtain information from official sources, while participants were urged to co-operate with law enforcement and conduct themselves peacefully.

The municipality reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting public safety and respecting the rights of all people within its communities.
