NXUBA – A 72-year-old suspect appeared before the Nxuba Magistrate’s Court for allegations of dealing with dagga, transporting dagga and possession of drugs worth nearly a million rand.

Police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said the suspect was arrested on 28 January by the Nxuba Crime Intelligence and Dog Unit following a tip-off about dagga being transported between Tarkastad and Nxuba.

She said an intelligence-driven operation was launched, and the vehicle matching the description was spotted and stopped near Nxuba.

“The suspect from Lingelihle, Nxuba was stopped driving a Toyota Corolla and upon searching the vehicle six big garden bags of dagga and one small bag of dagga were allegedly found in the suspect’s possession,” said Mgolodela.

She said that all seven bags of dagga and a Samsung cellphone were seized.

Mgolodela further said that the Toyota Corolla which is believed to have been used as instrumentality in the commission of a crime was also seized.

“The total cash value of the seized items is estimated to be more than R450 000,” said Mgolodela.

She said that the suspect was arrested on the spot.

The District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph lauded the joint success of the units.

He expressed concern about elderly people’s involvement in drug smuggling, noting they should be assisting law enforcement in removing drugs from the streets to protect their grandchildren.
