The alarm clocks rang early, the journey from Gqeberha to Humansdorp wasn’t short, and the weather delivered four seasons in one day. But none of it mattered to Pearson High School’s U17 netball side, who had one objective in mind: defending their First Choice Fast5 championship.
Mission accomplished. Emphatically.
Pearson claimed their second consecutive U17 title at Nico Malan High School over the weekend, marching through pool play unbeaten before dispatching Drostdy in the semi-final and edging Collegiate 24-17 in a tense final.
Pool domination sets the tone
Pearson wasted no time establishing their championship credentials, delivering three commanding pool victories. They had come to defend their title.
Brandwag discovered that reality first, overwhelmed 35-10 in a performance that showcased Pearson’s attacking fluency and defensive organisation.
Collegiate followed, beaten 25-11 in a result that would prove significant when the teams met again in the final. That 14-point pool victory demonstrated Pearson’s superiority whilst simultaneously providing a tactical blueprint that would prove valuable when silverware hung in the balance.
Hosts Nico Malan provided the sternest pool challenge, but Pearson emerged victorious 28-14 to complete a perfect group stage and advance to the knockout rounds with momentum and confidence.
The defending champions were hitting their straps at precisely the right moment.
Semi final statement
Drostdy arrived in the semi-final with ambitions of denying Pearson a finals berth and ending the champions’ title defence before the decider even arrived.
Instead, they were dismantled 36-16 in Pearson’s most dominant performance of the tournament. The 20-point margin reflected a championship performance that announced Pearson’s readiness for the final.
Drostdy competed bravely but found themselves outclassed by a Pearson side that had found another gear. The margin could have been larger had Pearson not eased off in the final quarter with the result already secured.
The final test
Collegiate arrived in the final having already tasted defeat against Pearson during pool play, but finals are different beasts entirely. The scoreboard resets. The pressure intensifies.
The final scoreline, 24-17 to Pearson, tells you everything about how tight this encounter became. The seven-point margin was comfortable enough to never truly feel like Collegiate could steal it, but close enough that Pearson couldn’t relax for a single moment.
Collegiate can hold their heads high. They pushed the champions harder in the final than anyone else managed all tournament, scoring 17 points when previous opponents had been held to 16 or fewer. But pushing champions and beating them are vastly different propositions, and Pearson demonstrated exactly why they’re the tournament’s premier outfit.

The “four seasons in one day” weather conditions at Humansdorp added another layer of challenge to an already demanding tournament. Playing quality netball when conditions shift dramatically requires adaptability and resilience.
