Maritzburg College held their nerve in a heart-stopping finish at AH Smith on Saturday, scraping home by two wickets against a spirited Kearsney side that refused to die wondering. In a low-scoring classic that ebbed and flowed throughout, College chased down 114 with just two wickets in hand, surviving a ferocious Kearsney fightback that took the contest down to the wire.
Kearsney won the toss and elected to bat on a surface offering plenty for the seamers, a decision that backfired spectacularly in the opening exchanges. College’s pace attack tore through the top order, reducing the hosts to a calamitous 4/2 after just 1.2 overs. Two wickets in the first two overs had Kearsney reeling and staring down the barrel.
Enter Asher Hollister and Keegan de Jager. The pair showed maturity beyond their years, digging in with patient batting to drag their side from the wreckage. Hollister grafted his way to 23 whilst De Jager struck a glorious six en route to 24 before falling in the 12th over with the score on 45. It was a rebuilding job executed with composure.
Wickets continued to tumble steadily, and when Kearsney slipped to 59/6 in the 17th over, a total above three figures seemed a distant dream. But Hayden Lotter anchored one end whilst Matthew Gorrie provided fireworks with the cameo of the innings, 19 off just 15 balls featuring two towering sixes and a boundary. The innings folded on 113 in 27.2 overs.
College captain Reece Willson was the chief destroyer, claiming 4-30 with seam bowling of the highest quality. Matt Bisset and Luke Venter chipped in with two wickets apiece as College’s pace trio exploited the conditions brilliantly.
Defending a modest total, Kearsney knew they needed early strikes—and they got them. Litha Gonya and Blake Pugh shared the new ball and ripped through College’s top order, reducing the visitors to 19-4 at lunch. Gonya finished with 2-25 from eight overs, whilst Pugh claimed 2-11 from six. The contest was alive.
The match turned on a fifth-wicket stand of 71 between Luan van der Merwe and Willson. The skipper struck 35 off 47 balls before Gorrie had him caught by De Jager, sparking a Kearsney resurgence. Gorrie finished with 3-39, whilst Rivan Moodley was exceptional—10 overs, four maidens, 1-14. College slumped to 100-7, then 112-8, with the result hanging in the balance.
Van der Merwe, however, refused to buckle. The left-hander remained unbeaten on 43 off 81 balls and, alongside Venter, steered College home with ice in his veins.
Kearsney can hold their heads high after a spirited bowling and fielding display that took this thriller to the death.
