Breaking new ground in spectacular fashion, Kearsney College’s U15A water polo side have etched their name into history by becoming the first school from Kwazulu Natal to lift the Ian Melliar U15 Water Polo Tournament trophy in the competition’s two-decade existence.

The prestigious tournament, hosted annually by Wynberg Boys’ High School in Cape Town, attracted 20 of South Africa’s elite U15 water polo teams.

The tournament began chaotically for the KwaZulu-Natal outfit. After an early flight to Cape Town, Kearsney had just 60 minutes before facing Rondebosch Boys’ High. The match ended 11–11, forcing a sudden-death penalty shoot-out which Kearsney lost 0–1, a disappointing start, but one that galvanised the team.

The response demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude. Kearsney rattled off three consecutive victories in the group stages, dispatching St John’s 7–4, edging SACS 7–5, and comfortably defeating Grey High 10–4. A 7–4 crossover victory against St David’s secured their quarter-final berth.

The quarter-final against St Stithians delivered edge of the seat drama. Trailing 7–9 with just two minutes remaining, Kearsney clawed back to 9–9, forcing another penalty shoot-out. This time, lessons learned from opening-day heartbreak proved invaluable, they held their nerve to advance.

Tournament favourites Bishops awaited in the semi-finals, but Kearsney produced a devastating opening quarter, racing to a 6–1 lead before securing an emphatic 15–9 victory.

The final against hosts Wynberg saw Kearsney establish a 4–1 first-quarter lead and never look back, controlling proceedings to claim a convincing 12–6 victory and spark jubilant celebrations.

Cai Terblanche was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, whilst brothers Kai and Blake Gaines earned Tournament Team selection, the perfect cap to a historic weekend.
