Western Province weather storm to beat Eastern province in thriller

The defending champions showed championship mettle when it mattered most. Western Province survived a fierce Eastern Province fight to claim a hard-earned 42-25 victory in the feature match of day one at the FNB Craven Week 2026, but the hosts at Kolisi Field made them work for every single point.

This 15:30 showdown in Gqeberha delivered on every ounce of its billing. Lead changes, momentum swings, brilliant tries, and fierce physicality, the final match of the opening day had it all. EP came to play in front of their home crowd, and for long periods, they had WP rattled.

But class eventually told. The Cape side found another gear in the second half, scoring three unanswered tries to pull clear. The 42-25 scoreline suggests comfort; the reality was anything but.

EP explode out the blocks

Eastern Province came out firing with all guns blazing. Four minutes in, they launched a sweeping wide attack that had the WP defence scrambling. Making it to within five metres of the tryline, they earned a penalty and took a quick tap before celebrating wildly.

The referee consulted the TMO, and after review, the try was confirmed. At 7-0, Kolisi Field erupted. The hosts had drawn first blood, and Province were on the back foot.

WP’s response was swift and brutal. Five minutes later, they rumbled towards the EP line with a powerful driving maul. The hosts managed to halt a few attempts, but ultimately the Cape side’s pack proved too strong. At 7-7, the contest was locked in a stalemate.

Province take control

The WP forwards had set the tone, and now the backs took over. In the 21st minute, the defending champions showed their quality by holding possession through multiple phases, probing for weaknesses before swinging the ball wide. The overlap was created, and they crossed for a 14-7 lead.

Eastern Province refused to fold. A penalty in the 32nd minute cut the deficit to 14-10, and when they slotted another three-pointer on the stroke of halftime, the scoreboard read 14-13. Province clung to a one-point advantage heading into the sheds, but this match was wide open.

Second-half fireworks

If EP’s coaches delivered a rousing halftime speech, it worked. Two minutes into the second half, the hosts produced a moment of magic. A beautiful linebreak cut through the WP defence like a hot knife through butter, and excellent support play finished the move with clinical precision. At 20-14, Eastern Province had reclaimed the lead, and Kolisi Field was rocking.

But champions don’t panic. Two minutes later, WP hit straight back with a linebreak of their own. The tryline beckoned, and they made no mistake. At 21-20, Province had regained the lead by the slimmest of margins, and the momentum had swung again.

WP pull clear

The 46th minute proved pivotal. WP forced a turnover and launched a devastating counter-attack. When they were finally halted, they didn’t panic or force the issue. Instead, they showed patience, stringing phase after phase together, waiting for the gap to appear. Eventually, it did, and they were rewarded with a try that extended the lead to 28-20.

A minute later, they twisted the knife further. More excellent phase play created space, and Province crossed again to make it 35-20. The defending champions had scored 14 unanswered points in the space of two minutes, and suddenly the contest looked over.

Eastern Province, to their credit, refused to surrender in front of their home crowd. Seven minutes later, they produced an excellent driving maul of their own to crash over and cut the deficit to 35-25. Game on? Not quite.

Province seal the deal

With 13 minutes remaining and a 10-point cushion, WP showed their class. In the 67th minute, they found space out wide and used their pace to devastating effect. The tryline was crossed, and at 42-25, the result was beyond doubt.

EP pushed them to the brink, particularly in that second-half opening where they briefly reclaimed the lead and had Province rattled.

But champions find a way, and WP did exactly that. Their ability to absorb pressure, respond immediately to setbacks, and then pull clear when it mattered most speaks volumes about their mental fortitude. The phase play in the second half was exceptional, showing patience and precision under pressure.

For Eastern Province, this was a performance to be proud of. Playing the defending champions on opening day in front of their home crowd, they matched WP for long periods and even led in the second half.

Western Province, have laid down a marker. They’ve won their opening fixture, shown they can grind out results when the going gets tough, and demonstrated the quality that makes them title favourites.
